### [**trezor.io/start**](https://trezor.io/start)

When you visit the page, the primary action is to download Trezor Suite for desktop (Windows, macOS, or Linux) or to continue in the browser. Trezor strongly recommends the desktop app for the initial setup and for firmware updates . Once Suite is installed and your device is connected via USB, the application guides you through every step: installing firmware, verifying the device's authenticity, generating your wallet backup (recovery seed), and setting a PIN .

### **The Setup Sequence**

**1. Install Firmware and Verify Authenticity**\
New Trezor devices ship without firmware for security reasons. Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest official firmware. After installation, Suite performs a cryptographic check to confirm the device is genuine and has not been tampered with . You confirm this check directly on the Trezor's screen or buttons.

**2. Create a New Wallet and Back Up the Seed**\
You choose "Create new wallet" (rather than "Recover"). The device then generates your recovery seed—typically 12, 20, or 24 words depending on the model and backup type selected. These words appear **only on the Trezor device's screen**, never on your computer monitor. You must write them down on the provided recovery seed cards in the exact order shown. The device will then quiz you on a few words to confirm you recorded them correctly .

**3. Set a PIN**\
You set a PIN that is entered using a randomized layout displayed on the device, which protects against keyloggers. This PIN is required to unlock the device and authorize transactions .

### **Critical Security Rules for This Process**

**Never enter your seed phrase into a computer or phone.** The recovery seed is only ever entered directly on the Trezor device itself, and only during a recovery operation (if your device is lost or replaced). Trezor's official guidance is unambiguous: any website, email, or support agent asking you to type your seed phrase is a scam . Trezor will never contact you asking for your seed, PIN, or passwords, and it cannot "deactivate" your device remotely .

**Download only from [trezor.io](https://trezor.io/).** Fake Trezor apps and phishing sites exist. Do not download Trezor Suite from search ads, email links, or third-party sites. Bookmark `trezor.io/start` or `trezor.io/trezor-suite` directly .
